I just returned from a 5 day sojourn to Santa Fe, New Mexico. It’s a favorite destination for me over the years, and always inspiring for many reasons. The biggest source of joy I find may be the landscape and light. The state motto, “The Land of Enchantment” is a good description because of the unique beauty of the high desert, especially around Santa Fe and the northern regions. The richness of the cultures and history is another plus.

When traveling, watercolors are a handy medium to take along. After I painted this scene, I added pen and ink to further define shapes and give pattern and texture as well. And yes, there are tall pointy trees in the land, you just don’t see them often. When art comes from imagination, a…
